Ask D-Tools: MCP Connectors for ChatGPT/Codex & Claude

How to connect the D-Tools Cloud connector to an external AI assistant so you can ask about your data from there

Written by Dave Kirn

D-Tools publishes a connector called D-Tools Cloud for ChatGPT, Codex, and Claude. Connect it once and you can ask about your D-Tools pipeline, projects, procurement, service, and accounts from inside that assistant.

Before you start

Your administrator must enable MCP Access for your user. This is a separate toggle from ordinary Ask D-Tools access, found in Settings > User Groups. See Ask D-Tools: Managing access for your team.

If MCP Access is off for you, the connector will still appear in the directory, but authorization will not succeed.

You will also need a ChatGPT or Claude plan that allows connectors. That is controlled by those vendors, not by D-Tools.

Connecting from Claude

  1. Open your Claude settings and go to Connectors.

  2. Search the connector directory for D-Tools Cloud.

  3. Choose to connect it.

  4. When prompted, sign in with your D-Tools Cloud email and password to authorize the connection.

Once authorized, start a conversation and ask a D-Tools question.

Connecting from ChatGPT

  1. Open your ChatGPT settings and go to the PLUGINS section.

  2. Search the directory for D-Tools Cloud.

  3. Choose to connect it.

  4. When prompted, sign in with your D-Tools Cloud email and password to authorize the connection.

Once authorized, ask a D-Tools question in any conversation.

Connecting from Codex

Codex uses the same D-Tools Cloud connector. Open the connector settings, search for it, connect, and authorize with your D-Tools Cloud login in the same way.

You sign in to D-Tools directly

Authorization happens on a D-Tools sign-in page. The assistant never sees or stores your D-Tools Cloud password, and the connection is tied to your own user account, not to your company as a whole.

What you can ask

Ask normally. You do not need special commands.

  • Show me the opportunities most likely to close this week

  • Which projects have procurement risk right now?

  • Which customers need follow-up across billing, active work, and service?

  • How do I set up change order statuses in D-Tools Cloud?

The connector can answer questions about your business data and questions about how D-Tools Cloud works.

It is read only. Always.

The connector can only read. It cannot create, update, send, approve, or delete anything in D-Tools Cloud, and it cannot propose an action for you to approve.

This is a hard limit in the connection, not a setting that can be changed. If you want Ask D-Tools to help you change something, do that in D-Tools Cloud, where you get an approval card. See Ask D-Tools: Approving actions.

Answers also respect your own D-Tools permissions, exactly as they do in the browser. Connecting an assistant does not widen what you can see.

If you have more than one D-Tools account

Ask the assistant to list your accounts first, then name the one you want:

  • List my D-Tools accounts, then show opportunity pipeline risks for the New York account

Troubleshooting

Problem

Likely cause

Authorization fails, or no D-Tools capability appears after connecting

MCP Access is not enabled for your user. Ask your D-Tools administrator.

Sign-in is rejected

Your account may not have Ask D-Tools access at all. Base Access is required before MCP Access can work.

The assistant will not change something in D-Tools

Expected. The connector is read only by design.

Answers seem narrower than you expect

Answers are scoped to your own D-Tools permissions.
